Frances Piron

Fran Piron
August 30, 1950 - Oct 4, 2024

Fran Piron was a hugger of strangers, a rescuer of books left in laundry rooms, and a militant left-hander.

Fran was an excellent speller, a “smart girl”, the kind who wins all the school prizes. She made her parents proud. She studied Biology at university at a time when women just didn’t do this. Her nose was always in a book. She figured out how to read while walking, often taking long walks in the city, sometimes barefoot.

She met a boy named Giancarlo while working at a restaurant over the summer. She waited tables, he washed dishes. They fell in love, eloped, ran away together, and had two sons.

Fran made her sons’ development her first priority. She assembled mountains of lego, pitched tents in the backyard, and made birthday pancakes that spelled out their names. She was a force of nature: chairing the PTA group, organizing school hot dog days, teaching art classes for toddlers at the community center. Often she’d be covered in fingerpaint and glitter.

As the kids got older she took a job at a bank. It was uninspiring and corporate and gray. To her coworkers Fran was the light, bright technicolor — a vibrant and silly force of personality to help get through the working day.

In 2017 cancer took her husband and Fran’s heart broke in a million pieces. But her heart was healed as her grandchildren were born — first one, then two, then three, then four!

When cancer hit Fran, she hit back. She gave it a serious seven-year beating before slipping away peacefully surrounded by her sons and her family.

If there’s something beyond this life, Fran is now with her husband, telling him all about their beautiful grandkids who she loved more than anything.

A true original and unintentionally hilarious, Fran taught her children to laugh, but mostly she taught them to be themselves, something she did fearlessly. It was her recipe for a life well lived.

Your tribute to your mom is heartfelt. It’s a true testament to the incredible person she was. Her quick wit and ability to make others smile, even in her darker moments, were truly a gift. As for what you & Sarah (& Stephen) have coped with for many months in such an unfaltering & caring way, can only show that there are no boundaries that bind a parent to a child and then a child to a parent. Love is in the end the true measure of our existence. Take care of yourselves and may Fran’s memory be a blessing. **RIP Franny – your light will live on.

The connections you make as a kid, if positive, last a lifetime. Months, even years, can go by without speaking but that bond doesn't go away. I met Fran back in 1995 as a 15 year old friend of her son Steve and she never failed to make me feel welcome.

Fast forward a couple of decades and she still checked in with me to see how life was going. Whether it was through WhatsApp or Facebook, she would always ask about me and my family. She would send positive affirmations and virtual hugs and had no idea how they made me smile!

Fran always spoke so proudly of her sons and grandkids. I could feel her smiling over messenger! Even through the cancer, she stayed positive and a pleasure to talk to. She was genuinely happy just being around her loved ones.

I know Fran was extremely proud of her family and I know she is resting happy.

You will be missed Mrs. Piron!

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Fran was such a bright light to us all!
We spent many years working together at BMO. The day I started Fran was the first to walk up to me and make me feel at home. We spent many many hours talking, laughing and discussing world events. Fran became my "work Mom" very quickly. I have such fond memories of her. Rest in peace, Fran. You will be forever missed.

What an amazing description…
Growing up as a kid as part of the extended Piron clan I would always wonder “who is this lady that is always laughing and smiling??” She stood out…big time, and for all the right reasons. Life goes on - we grow up, and memories fade but “Franny” left a mark. The pic is exactly as I remember her when I was a kid….condolences….Ron

Andrew, Stephen and families. My heart breaks for your loss. Fran was exactly as you describe her - and more. She was a good friend and warrior. I’ll miss her daily emotional memes, always uplifting and positive.
She was so proud of the men you have become and to say that her grandkids brought her joy is a tremendous understatement. She will be missed, but I have no doubt your father is waiting for her with open arms. She’s at peace and no longer in pain. Sending my condolences to all who knew and loved her.
