It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Albert van Mourik on Tuesday, December 27 at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton in his 94th year. Albert was born on March 30, 1929 in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. He met his future bride, Martha deVries (famke van Joure) in 1947 when she purchased 2 ounces of cheese from his family's dairy store. In 1951, he immigrated to Alberta, Canada but later moved to southern Ontario where Martha joined him in 1952. They married that same year on December 6th and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. He will be missed by his children Jeannette, Al (Cathy), Marion (Mike Urquhart) and Nancy (Ron Godwaldt). Grandparents to Jenna (Adam Howitz); Mindy (Mike Mauthe), Mike Jr. (Stephanie); Jonathon (Meaghan), Benjamin and Arianna (Matt). Great-grandfather of two.
Albert worked at Stelco for 38 years and in his retirement started the semi-annual Galvanize Luncheon Club at Swiss Chalet. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 25 years and an avid supporter of veteran activities, especially the Poppy Fund Campaign. He loved to spend time in his flower and vegetable gardens at the family home.
Predeceased by four brothers Cor, Arie, Koos and Johan. He will be missed by his sister-in-law Margaret deVries and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at M.A. Clark & Sons Funeral Home, 567 Upper Wellington Street in Hamilton on Tuesday, January 3rd at 11:00 am. A celebration of his life will begin at 1:00 pm. A family graveside service will be held prior to the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Lung Association would be appreciated by the family.
Sorry for your loss. Albert was a true gentlemen in every sense of the word.
